Victoria

Gardens, Castles & Coastal Charms

There’s something special about arriving in Victoria by sea. As the 8:10 AM Black Ball Ferry carried me from Port Angeles to Vancouver Island, I watched the misty coastline come into view, knowing a day of lush gardens, historic elegance, and coastal charm awaited me.

A Blooming Welcome at Butchart Gardens

No visit to Victoria is complete without stepping into Butchart Gardens, a floral wonderland that feels like a scene from a fairy tale. As I wandered through the Sunken Garden, the cascading greenery and vibrant blooms left me in awe. The Japanese Garden, with its peaceful bridges and koi ponds, felt like a hidden oasis. The Butterfly Garden, Miniature World, and the Bug Zoo gave me more time to soak in the beauty without rushing. Instead, I found a quiet bench, sipped on a warm cup of tea, and simply enjoyed the fragrance of flowers in the breeze.

A Step Back in Time

From one stunning garden to another, my next stop was Hatley Castle, a grand estate with a history as captivating as its architecture. Once a lavish home, then a military college, and now part of Royal Roads University, the castle’s stone façade and perfectly manicured gardens transported me to a different era. Walking through the Italian and Japanese gardens, I imagined the aristocratic life once lived here, with afternoon teas overlooking the ocean.

The Soul of Victoria

Beyond its famous landmarks, Victoria itself is a city that begs to be explored. Strolling along the Inner Harbour, I watched street performers, admired the iconic Empress Hotel, and breathed in the crisp Pacific air. Even without stepping inside, the grandeur of British Columbia’s Parliament Buildings was a sight to behold.

A Perfectly Curated Day

Skipping the usual tourist attractions let me experience Victoria at my own pace, without the rush. From the floral artistry of Butchart Gardens to the timeless elegance of Hatley Castle, the day felt like a perfect mix of nature, history, and relaxed island charm.

As the ferry carried me back to Port Angeles, I knew this was more than just a day trip—it was a glimpse into the refined beauty that makes Victoria truly special. 🌿
