Christchurch/Arthur’s pass/Hokitika

Christchurch/Arthur’s pass/Hokitika Mountains to Mesmerizing Sunsets New Zealand has a way of leaving you in awe, making you feel small in the best possible way—surrounded by landscapes that seem almost too breathtaking to be real. My journey took me from the urban charm of Christchurch to the rugged beauty of Arthur’s Pass and ended with the golden hues of Hokitika’s sunset-lit shores. Christchurch: A City of Resilience and Beauty Arriving in Christchurch, I was greeted by a city that harmoniously mixes history with contemporary liveliness. My experience at Crowne Plaza Christchurch was the ideal combination of comfort and cityscape, providing me with a warm haven after tiring days of discovery. My personal favorite was the Christchurch Botanic Gardens—a serene haven amidst the city bustle. Strolling through the greenery, along the Avon River, and beneath massive trees was like entering a living postcard. Spring flowers brought bursts of color, and it was an absolute treat for nature enthusiasts. Arthur’s Pass: Snow-Capped Majesty Leaving Christchurch, I headed west toward Arthur’s Pass, and the drive itself was nothing short of cinematic. The winding roads led me through dramatic landscapes, and as I ascended, the air grew crisper, the peaks taller, and the views more surreal. I buckled up my trail boots for a hike that delivered snow-dusted mountain range vistas, and it did not let me down. Standing on a vantage point, I gazed over the rough summits blanketed with new snow, stretching miles into the distance. The gusts whistled, clouds swept rapidly across the sky, and for a brief moment, I was alone in the universe. Hokitika: Where Magic Paints the Sky My last destination was Hokitika, a seaside town that is nothing less than a secret treasure. As the sun started to set, the sky transformed into a work of art of pink and gold, bathing the ocean in a golden light. It was the sort of sunset that makes you forget all else—just you, the waves and nature’s grand finale for the day. Dinner at Priya Indian Restaurant was just the thing to cap off the night, rich curries and warm naan that was like a hug at the end of a day of traveling. Afterward, I stayed at the Beachfront Hotel, where the waves still pounded away from my own room. Listening to the ocean in the morning was one of those tranquil moments you don’t ever forget. A Journey to Remember From Christchurch’s botanical loveliness to Arthur’s Pass mountain grandeur and Hokitika’s dreamy sunsets, this trip was an unforgettable blend of adventure, tranquility, and breathtaking vistas. Every location had a story to share, and I just happened to be fortunate enough to hear it.   Have more time? Franz Josef/Fox glaciers

Franz Josef/Fox glaciers A Tour of Ice, Forests, and Endless Pies Hidden away on New Zealand’s glorious West Coast, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are an awe-inspiring combination of vast ice walls, rain forests, and cinematic scenery that’ll leave you dreaming you’ve been transported to another world. With glacier treks and stretches of fern-covered highway that go on forever, it’s a landscape where nature is in charge—and where a good pie is never more than a few miles away. Glacier Hikes: Walking Among the Giants The greatest highlight of my journey was coming close to the Franz Josef Glacier. Hiking to the glacier lookout point was a surreal experience—wandering through glacial valleys formed millions of years ago, around tumbling waterfalls and broken cliffs. As I approached it, I heard the creaking of the ice more distinctly, a testament to its eternal movement. A short drive away, Fox Glacier offered a slightly different but equally mesmerizing landscape. The Lake Matheson Walk, just nearby, gifted me with one of the most stunning reflections I’ve ever seen—snow-capped peaks mirrored perfectly in the still waters. No wonder it’s called the Mirror Lake! For the ultimate experience, heli-hiking is where it’s at. A helicopter tour over the glaciers, followed by an ice hike, is as close to sitting in the front row of a deep blue crevasse and otherworldly ice formations as you’ll ever get. It’s as close as you’ll ever come to feeling as if you’re on another planet. Fern-Lined Roads and 3D Mountain Views Traveling between these glaciers was an experience by itself. The winding, long roads were enveloped in a seemingly endless ocean of ferns, and the drive had a prehistoric atmosphere. Around each bend, huge mountains towered in 3D, their rocky tops covered in mist, and the whole landscape had a live painting quality to it. The Pie Capital of the West Coast If there’s one thing you should learn when traveling in this area—it’s that pies are no joke. Each town, each café, and each roadside bakery appeared to have its own take on the ideal New Zealand meat pie. The steak and cheese pie from a small shop in Franz Josef village? My personal favorite. Flaky, buttery crust with rich, slow-cooked filling—it was the perfect fuel for glacier hiking. And then there are the sweet pies. The boysenberry and apple pie was a revelation, served best with a hot flat white while watching the rain roll over the mountains. Why This Place Stays With You Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are not so much about the ice as about the journey. It’s about twisting through emerald-green landscapes, being at the bottom of ancient glaciers, and enjoying the simple pleasure of a warm pie after a day of adventure. It’s an area where nature’s power is all out, but somehow it is supremely peaceful. As I pulled away, with mountains disappearing in my rearview, I knew this was not a visit—it was an experience indelibly etched in my memory. Have more time? Take a deeper dive… Dive Deeper into These Destinations Lake Matheson – A mirror-like lake reflecting the stunning Southern Alps, perfect for a scenic walk. Mountainous cliffs, plummeting waterfalls, and peaceful waters establish a dream landscape that seems time-warped from reality. Turn after turn of this isolated Eden unfolds a wonder, making for an experience of a lifetime. Waking Up to Serenity at Lakeview Manapouri Motel Prior to entering Milford Sound, I had a serene night at the Lakeview Manapouri Motel—a gem that provides stunning views of Lake Manapouri. Rising to the gentle morning mist floating above the lake, with mountains mirrored in the calm waters, was a treat to the eyes. It was the ideal way to begin a day of discovery. Grand Panoramas and Open Fields The journey to Milford Sound itself is simply breathtaking. Cruising through expansive green fields, lined by granite peaks and emerald green forests, felt like stepping into a wildlife documentary. The fresh mountain breeze, the distant sound of birds chirping, and the feeling of sheer freedom made the drive an experience all by itself. Cruising Through the Fjords with Jucy Cruise Arriving at Milford Sound, I went on a Jucy Cruise, which brought me right into the heart of the fjords. As the boat moved smoothly through the glassy water, sheer rock walls towered above, and waterfalls like Stirling Falls cascaded spectacularly down from the heights. Seals lounged in the sun on the rocks, and we even spotted a pod of dolphins frolicking in the boat’s wake. The fjords, covered in fog and mystery, felt like a dream come true. Surprising Adventure: A Family Moment of Bonding with a Flat Tire Repair No road trip would be complete without a surprise twist! Along the way, we encountered a flat tire—not necessarily on the agenda, but it became a fun family adventure. With the stunning New Zealand landscape as our backdrop, we worked together, laughing and problem-solving on the side of the road. Sometimes, it’s these unexpected moments that make the trip even more special. What inspired us to set out on this journey Milford Sound is not just a place—it’s an experience that lingers.
