From Sep 5 to Sep 6, the journey continued into Charleston, where historic streets, colorful homes, waterfront views, and Southern character made a fitting final chapter. Staying at the Renaissance Hotel provided an easy base for exploring the city, with a short but full day of historic sights, local food, and walks through its distinctive neighborhoods.

Walking Through Historic Charleston

The day unfolded along King Street, where lively storefronts and historic architecture set the tone before heading toward The Battery and Patriots Point. The waterfront brought a different perspective of Charleston, with harbor views and reminders of the city’s long maritime and military history. Wandering through these streets together made even the stretches between major sights part of the experience.

Colors Along Rainbow Row

Rainbow Row stood out as one of the city’s most photogenic corners, with its row of brightly colored historic homes. A walk through the surrounding neighborhoods revealed more of Charleston’s preserved architecture, shaded streets, and distinctive Southern details. It was an easy place to slow down, take a few photos, and enjoy the scenery without needing much of an itinerary.

Riverfront Moments & City Streets

The Pineapple Fountain offered a relaxed stop along the waterfront, with the harbor stretching out beyond the promenade. From there, the Charleston City Market brought a livelier atmosphere, filled with local crafts, souvenirs, and the steady movement of visitors. Moving between the waterfront and historic streets gave the day a nice balance of sightseeing and simply exploring at our own pace.

A Taste of Charleston

Food naturally became part of the Charleston experience, beginning with lunch at Basic Kitchen and ending with dinner at The Watch Rooftop Kitchen & Spirits. Fried green tomatoes paired with rooftop views made for a particularly enjoyable evening, turning dinner into one of those small highlights that stays with the journey after the sightseeing is over.

A Coastal Break Beyond the City

Before leaving Savannah, I spent time at an island beach, trading historic streets and riverfront scenery for open skies and coastal surroundings. The change of pace offered a refreshing contrast to the city’s architecture and busy neighborhoods. It became a peaceful way to round off my Savannah chapter before continuing further along the Southern journey.

Shem Creek was on our plans, but unfortunately missed visiting it during this short stay. Sometimes travel schedules win, because apparently even vacations insist on reminding us that time is a limited resource.
