Skagway

Chasing Gold & Puppies in the Yukon

Tucked away in Alaska’s Inside Passage, Skagway is like a town straight out of a Wild West movie—except instead of cowboys, it’s full of gold rush history, epic mountain views, and adventure at every turn. So, when I got the chance to explore the legendary Klondike Highway and dive into the Yukon wilderness, I knew I was in for something special.

Hitting the Klondike Highway

The White Pass & Yukon Route is famous for its jaw-dropping scenery, and driving along the Klondike Highway did not disappoint. Winding roads led us through lush forests, past rugged cliffs, and alongside rivers that shimmered under the endless summer daylight. Every mile seemed to have a new photo-worthy stop—from misty waterfalls cascading down rock faces to sweeping valley views that made me feel like I was in the middle of an epic Alaskan postcard.

Striking It Rich?

You can’t come to Skagway without trying your hand at gold panning—after all, this place was the heart of the Klondike Gold Rush! I scooped up a pan full of dirt, swirled it around, and let the water do its thing. Did I find gold? Let’s just say if I ever strike it rich, it won’t be from panning. But the experience was pure fun, and for a moment, I totally understood the gold fever that gripped thousands of hopefuls in the 1890s.

Future Iditarod Champions

Now, this was the part of the trip I was most excited about—dog sledding and visiting an Iditarod musher training camp! These incredible huskies are born to run, and getting a glimpse into the world of sled dogs was an absolute thrill. Watching them in action, pulling a cart with the same energy they’d bring to an icy race, was unreal.

And then came the best part… puppies! At Tagish Kennel on Tutshi Lake, I got to cuddle the next generation of sled dogs. Fluffy, energetic, and beyond adorable, these pups are future Iditarod champions in training. It was hard to say goodbye, but knowing they were growing up in such a breathtaking place made it a little easier.

Why Skagway Stole My Heart

This wasn’t just a scenic drive or a touristy excursion—it was an adventure packed with history, wild beauty, and unforgettable moments. From gold panning to puppy cuddles, Skagway delivered a day I won’t forget. If you’re ever in Alaska, make sure this experience is on your list—you won’t regret it.
